FAQs

Who is the programme for?

We welcome all grades of anaesthetists to help us on the programme.

What will I get out of it?

Anaesthetists are renowned for their willingness to teach, and we see no reason why this is any different. By being involved with the programme, you’ll have the chance to help someone interested in our speciality to reach their aim.

However, it can also be used to strengthen your own portfolio, for example by hitting several ST4 self-assessment criteria (managing QIP cycles, teaching experience, leadership (local reps - see below)

What will I have to do?

We will aim to recruit Foundation Year doctors (FYs) to the programme. Once we have done this, we will put them in contact with an anaesthetist.

As local anaesthetists, you’ll be in prime position to offer an interested FY audit / QIP work, or signpost them to someone in the department who might be able to help. You may be willing to have the FY along to an on-call or elective list (following proper local procedures of course), or indeed help them with some interview practice. There is no fixed agenda for you to follow.

This sounds like a lot of work for me?

We do not want this to be the case – the programme aims to develop the interest of FYs by themselves seeking opportunities. We do not expect that you’ll be having to go out of your way to force them through opportunities they do not want to pursue.

What if my FY drops out?

We are not holding anyone to a contract with this programme. Ultimately, if someone decides anaesthetics isn’t for them, that is no problem and they can leave the programme.

Other FYs might develop a later interest in the programme, and they can join at any point.

Can I become more involved?

Yes, absolutely. We will be looking to have local representatives within each hospital. These reps will be the first point-of-contact for any problems or queries that may arise, and will help to coordinate local connections.

In addition, as mentioned above, we will be running teaching sessions virtually. If you have a particular work-related passion or interest you’d like to teach on, we’d welcome your experience.

My region isn’t available?

Unfortunately, we are unable instantly expand to all deaneries. However, if your region is not yet part of the programme but you think you’d like to lead this in your area, please fill out the form and we’ll be in touch.

I still have questions.

Drop us an email, social media message or use the contact portal and we’ll be in touch.
